Guidelines for Parents
Children with ADHD find it difficult to do homework at home and often have a hard time doing it due to lack of attention and concentration. With the following guidelines we intend that parents help their children to organize themselves with the following tasks:
- Create a physical and structured environment:
- Work rules (simple, clear and agreed); it is good that they are visible.
- Establish a daily work routine at home (mark well-defined work and leisure times).
- Anticipate possible changes in routines (extracurricular activities …).
- Always have the class schedule in view so that they can remember each subject and the work to be done in each one of them.
- Keep the homework schedule present whenever possible.
- Avoid being in a place with distractions (kitchen, living room …).
- Organize tasks and use of media:
- Use things that favor their attention (videos, computer, Tablet …).
- Help them to structure tasks so that they are short and motivating.
- Use diagrams and summaries.
- Establish a list of activities to be carried out and that can be marked by those carried out (checklist).
- Always have a watch that establishes the “concentrated” work time.
- Have a good organization of the work material (before going to work you should check that you have everything at your fingertips to carry out the work).
- Use of a signal (alarm, after having a snack, a song …) that indicates that study time begins.
- Monitor understanding:
- Attract his attention to the tasks in a more playful way (let him have this time standing up talking about the activity).
- Summarize instructions individually.
- Repeat the instructions using other words with gestures and visual support.
- Gradual increase in concentration:
- Try to increase work times.
- Reinforce attention times with verbal praise.
- Establish a reward system for time spent on homework.
