FOR PARENTS
You know the importance of language and its stimulation from a very early age. We remind you again with this article where we will explain the most important ways to stimulate it at home with your children. Involving the child quickly in the conversation and talking to him, even when he is not able to respond is something that stimulates him enough, but it is necessary to take into account some of the following strategies:
- Visual supports
Adding pictures to words allows the baby to associate the meaning of the word with its visual representation. Present figurines explaining each one: have you seen the giraffe? It has a very long neck … The crocodile is green … You can also describe the images and make the baby pay attention to you.
- Sound games
Listening is essential for the baby to learn to speak. You can make a sound bingo, for example, or make him listen to the sounds of the animals and explain that: “the cat goes meow”, and “the dog guides woof.”
- Language games
To always be interacting with the baby, all games are good. The manipulative games can serve as conversation and other games reproduce the elements of the day to day, such as the fruits or the vegetables that we cut when preparing dinner.
- Tell stories and read books
When you tell a story, the way of speaking is no longer the same. It is by listening to you at this time that the baby will be able to realize that there are several types of words (voice), and adapt their listening level.
Also let him explore his books, pile them up, manipulate them, turn the pages, etc. This is how his desire to tell stories will develop as well, recounting and describing the pictures.
- Describe the actions
Use the words to describe the child’s actions and feelings. This will also help him integrate a new vocabulary. For example, when crying: “You are crying, you seem sad to see that mom is going away.”
- Correct your first words
A child learns from you. When he mispronounces, you must repeat the word correctly, exaggerating syllable by syllable and the more complicated sounds. There you show him that you have understood, without putting pressure on him. In addition, when the child hears you pronounce the complete sentences, he learns from the example and he learns from you!
